What is a tear trough and why do we develop them?
The tear troughs are the hollow grooves that extend down and outward from the inner corner of the eyes. These grooves are known as tear troughs due to the tendency of tears to pool in them. We have tear troughs due to the unique anatomy of the lower eyelid. A slight separation between the margin of the bony eye socket and the cheek fat, along with a relative lack of connective tissue forms the groove.
It is normal for almost everyone to have a slight tear trough from birth, although people of certain backgrounds are more prone to having deeper and longer tear troughs, usually due to larger eye sockets and more deeply set eyes.
With age, the tear trough generally becomes more pronounced, with the resulting hollowness catching shadows and giving the impression of dark circles. Even from our early 20’s these changes start to manifest, although it can occur earlier in some people than others.
The two key changes that cause tear troughs to become more pronounced are a loss of mid-cheek fat, and the natural sagging of the mid-cheek fat and skin. Weight-loss may also accelerate the natural progression of tear troughs, as can smoking and sun-damage.
