    Treatment info

    What the treatment can do

Thread lifting is a non-surgical treatment designed to lift sagging skin, slow down further sagging, and restore collagen. It can also improve the appearance of facial features like your cheeks, nose, chin, and jawlineIt is a popular choice for people with mild sagging around their cheeks, jawline, mouth, and neck.

Threads are fine strings of material inserted beneath the skin under local anaesthetic. The engage the skin’s under-surface, and when tightening, allow repositioning and lifting of your skin to restore more youthful facial contours. They can also add structural volume, allowing us to improve the shape, definition, and contour of various facial features.

    Suitability

Thread lifting is ideal for people who have mild sagging skin and good skin quality, and realistic expectations.

As thread lifting supports your skin and stimulates collagen, it is also a great option for people who want to invest in preserving youthful facial contours, and use it as an anti-ageing treatment.

    Preparation

Before thread lifting, it is vital to strictly follow the preparation instructions:

    • Remove all makeup and wash your face and neck before arriving for your appointment
    • If you have long hair, wear it up with a headband
    • Do not consume alcohol, vape or smoke within 48 hours of your appointment
    • Avoid intense exercise immediately before your appointment
    • Ensure you have some cold packs at home, to use after your treatment
    • If applicable, shave or closely trim the treatment area the day before your appointment

    Aftercare

After your thread lift, you must strictly follow all aftercare instructions for quick healing, to reduce the risk of side effects, and for optimal results:

    • Do not smoke, vape, or drink alcohol for 7 days
    • Do not apply makeup for 48 hours
    • To minimise swelling and bruising, gently apply a wrapped cold pack to the treated areas
    • Take over the counter pain relief as required, and where safe
    • Apply anti-bacterial ointment twice per day to the thread insertion sites for 5 days
    • Avoid excessive facial movements and expressions for 7 days

    Results

You will experience an immediate improvement in your sagging after thread lifting. There will be some initial swelling, and localised tenderness is normal after the anaesthetic wears off.

Over the first few days, the area will feel tight, you may hear and feel popping and clicking, and in rare cases, dimpling may occur around the thread insertion sites. Initially, the result is in the ‘hyper-corrected’ stage, where the skin is lifted beyond it’s normal position.

As the treated areas heal, the skin will settle in its lifted position. You can look forward to enjoying more youthful facial contours, with results lasting 12-24 months. Aside from the lift, as your body makes new collagen your skin will be firmer, stronger, and less prone to future sagging.

Thread lifting is a non-surgical procedure that uses absorbable threads to lift and reposition sagging skin. The threads are either barbed, cogged, or have cones, and are inserted below the skin using a small cannula. After insertion, the threads grab the undersurface of the skin, and are tightened allowing the skin to be lifted.

Good candidates for thread lifting are over the age of 18, in good health, and with mild sagging skin on their cheeks, jawline or neck.

They have good skin quality, realistic expectations, and are committed to carefully following all preparation and aftercare instructions.

Silhouette Soft threads are made of poly-lacctic-acid, and feature sliding, bi-direction cones. These cones have the open ends facing inwards.

When inserted, the cones engage the soft tissue, and allow the skin to be repositioned. The bidirectional nature means the sagging skin can be brought towards the firmer skin in higher areas.

The sliding feature allows the threads to move with facial expressions, reducing the risk of bunching, puckering, and thread breakage.

MINT threads are made of polydioxanone (PDO) and feature fine barbs along the length of the threads.

After insertion, these barbs catch the soft tissue. They are then pulled tight and fixed to one another, repositioning and lifting the skin.

APTOS threads are made of polycaprolactone (PCL) and polydioxanone (PDO). They feature small barbs along their length, which engage the undersurface of the skin.

After insertion, they are pulled tight and fixed, which repositions and lifts sagging skin.

While threads can be placed anywhere on the face and neck, they are most commonly used to treat sagging in the following areas:

      • Cheek sagging
      • Nasolabial folds
      • Marionette folds
      • Jowls and jawline sagging
      • Neck

Brow thread lifting and Fox eye thread lifting are also done, but results are very unreliable.

Thread lifting is also done in the nose, however it is only suitable for very select candidates.

Thread lifting is a minimally-invasive procedure done under local anaesthetic.

After your consultation, your skin will be thoroughly cleaned. We then use numbing injections to anaesthetise the areas where the threads will be placed.

Once numb, tiny pilot holes are made in your skin in strategic locations. Fine threads are then inserted through these pilot holes, and advanced in the fatty tissue beneath the skin.

After insertion the threads are tightened and secured.

We then apply an anti-bacterial ointment to the pilot holes.

Thread lifting has very mild discomfort, often described as a sharp or aching sensation. However, when done using local anaesthetic, this discomfort can be significantly reduced.

After the anaesthetic wears off, you may feel tender in the treated areas for a few days. You can manage any discomfort with over-the-counter pain relief and a cold compress, used under the direction of your practitioner.

Thread lifting gives an immediate results, however the initial period has a ‘hyper-corrected’ appearance. This means the lifting effect often looks more dramatic as the threads are tightened to secure the skin.

Over 4-6 weeks the results will settle, and your skin firmness will improve as your body produces collagen.

The final result is typically seen 12 weeks after the treatment.

Proper preparation for thread lifting is vital in ensuring your treatment goes smoothly and the lowest risk of side effects.

      One week before your procedure:

      • Avoid alcohol and smoking
      • Stop taking supplements that thin your blood (like fish oil and vitamin E), unless you are taking for a diagnosed medical condition

One day before your thread lift:

      • Shower twice per day, paying particular attention to washing your face and neck
      • Remove all makeup and do not reapply it
      • Refrain from intense exercise and physical activity

Thread lift aftercare is vital to reduce risks and speed up healing.

For the first 72 hours after thread lifting:

      • Use a cold compress to reduce swelling and bruising
      • Avoid alcohol and smoking
      • Do not apply makeup

For the first 2 weeks after thread lifting:

      • Apply anti-bacterial ointment to the injection sites morning and night until healed
      • Avoid chewing gum and drinking through a straw
      • Avoid excessive facial movements, and facial massage (including gua sha)
      • Avoid hot environments, including saunas, spas and steam rooms
      • Sleep on your back

Thread lifting is a safe procedure, but has a number of potential side effects. These include:

      • Redness, bruising and swelling
      • Haematoma (large bruises)
      • Pain, numbness and facial weakness
      • Transient skin dimpling
      • Infections
      • Thread breakage and extrusion
      • Treatment failure

To reduce risks of thread lifting, carefully follow all preparation and aftercare instructions, and choose a reputable, doctor-led cosmetic clinic for your thread lift.
