Causes of facial asymmetry
Why is my face uneven?
An uneven face is natural, and related to the way our face develops in utero. Some people naturally have more symmetrical faces than others, while others have significant asymmetry that can make them feel self-conscious. A number of things can make facial asymmetry worse, such as smoking, injury and ageing, as can certain medical conditions like Bell’s palsy. The number one cause of facial asymmetry aside from genetics is which side you chew on. This changes the position of your jaw, and makes one side of your face more muscular than the other.
The only natural way to improve facial symmetry is to try and chew using both side of your jaw. By looking after your skin and overall health, you can also slow down the progression of facial asymmetry that occurs with age.
Why is my jaw uneven?
Everyone has an uneven jaw because the prefer to chew on one side of their face. This causes an enlargement of the chewing muscles of mastication (mainly the temporalis and masseter muscles), which can slowly adjust the position of your jaw bone. You can naturally improve jaw asymmetry by chewing on both side of your jaw. As an alternative you can consider masseter slimming injections and temporalis slimming injections to slim the larger side of your face.
Why are my eyebrows uneven?
Most people have uneven eyebrows. The position of your eyebrows is determined by the shape of your brow bone and the strength of your frontalis forehead muscles. Changes in eyebrow hair distribution and thickness can also affect eyebrow symmetry.
To improve the symmetry of your eyebrows, you can style them to be more symmetrical. You can also use brow fillers and brow anti-wrinkle injections to adjust their position.
Why are my lips uneven?
All lips are asymmetrical, although some people have more uneven lips than others. The symmetry of your lips is determined by the distribution of your red lip on each side, the underlying lip volume, your teeth, and the muscle strength on each side of your face. As there are so many factors contributing to lip symmetry, it is impossible to have perfectly even lips.
However, lip filler and a lip flip can be used to adjust the volume and muscle strength of your lips, improving your lip symmetry.
Why is my chin uneven?
An uneven chin is most often caused by mal-position of your mandible (jaw bone) and underlying dental issues. While surgery can be used to improve symmetry, chin filler is a non-surgical, no downtime treatment option to correct chin asymmetry. While perfect chin symmetry is not possible, improving an uneven chin can help to make your face appear more attractive.
Treatments for facial asymmetry
How dermal fillers help with face symmetry
Dermal fillers can achieve significant improvements in facial symmetry. Dermal fillers add structural volume enabling us to reshape facial features. When used appropriately, this allows your cosmetic injector to match the weak (treated) side, with the stronger side. Dermal filler can improve symmetry in almost all areas of the face on the weaker side. If you want your larger, more prominent side to match the weaker side, fillers cannot help. Muscle-slimming injections are a better option in this case.
How anti-wrinkle & muscle slimming injections help with face symmetry
Anti-wrinkle injections can improve symmetry by raising or lowering certain facial features. As they work by relaxing facial muscles they can adjust eyebrow height, change the position of your mouth corners, and add height to your lips. Treating one side allows for an improvement in symmetry.
Muscle-slimming injections can be administered to the masseter muscles along the jawline or the temporalis muscles in the temples. This weakens the treated muscles, reducing their size. By treating one side, or treating one side more extensively, symmetry can be improved. Muscle relaxing injections can make the larger side more similar to the smaller side, because they reduce muscle bulk.
What does a symmetrical face look like?
While symmetrical faces are seen as attractive, a perfectly symmetrical face can be quite uncomfortable to look at. Half-face mirroring studies found that humans find slightly asymmetrical faces to be the most attractive.
Faces with perfect symmetry are less attractive as they do not look real. Similar to the ‘uncanny valley’ effect when looking at life-like dolls.
Fortunately, perfect symmetry is not attainable with facial symmetry injections. However, with this no downtime treatment, you can achieve noticeable improvements in the symmetry of your face.
