Lip fillers are a non-surgical injectable treatment that augments and rejuvenate your lips.
Lip fillers are made of a compound based on hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in our skin.
Treating your lips with fillers can augment the size, shape, definition and symmetry, and improve hydration.
Lip fillers are a great option to improve the appearance of your lips. They can:
- Improve the top and bottom lip ratio
- Reduce the top lip thinning when smiling
- Add projection to the lips
- Give the lips more shape and definition
- Hydrate the lips and improve their texture
- Treat common signs of lip ageing
- Improve lip symmetry
Lip fillers augment the volume of your top and bottom lips. By carefully placing lip filler in key areas, we can improve shape, definition, projection, and balance.
Lip fillers can enhance the following areas:
- The upper and lower vermillion borders to enhance definition
- The body of the lips to add size, projection and improve symmetry
- The paired philtral columns that extend from the upper vermillion border towards the nose
- The oral commisures (the corners of the mouth) to add support
- The Cupid’s bow to enhance upper lip definition
Most people have 0.5-1ml of lip filler per treatment. Larger lips need more filler than smaller ones.
Most people need 1-3 sessions in the first 12 months to build up their lips.
Maintenance is then required every 12-24 months on average.
Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are the best for lips. We use one of soft or mid-thickness that holds shape and has good hydrating properties. This type of lip filler looks and feels natural.
The best way to get fuller lips with lip filler is to use a lip plumper. This is a topical product that you apply to the lips. The results are very subtle and don’t last long.
A lip flip relaxes your lip muscles. This adds very subtle vertical height without changing the volume. It also reduces your top lip thinning when you smile.
Lip filler adds volume to your lips to enhance the size, shape, definition and proportions. Lip filler can achieve a more pronounced result that a lip flip, and is significantly longer lasting.
Lip fillers are made of a compound based on hyaluronic acid. This is ideal for augmenting your lips as it adds very natural looking and feeling volume, and improves hydration.
Yes, when performed correctly lip fillers will look natural. Fake looking lip fillers result from using incorrect injection techniques, too much lip filler, or the wrong type of filler.
While everyone has a different idea about what looks good, there are some fundamental principles of ideal lip proportions.
Your top lip should project forward from the face slightly more than your bottom lip.
Your bottom lip should be the same size or slightly bigger in the vertical dimension than your top lip.
Lip filler can be used to improve the top and bottom lip ratios.
The Cupid’s bow refers to the vermillion border of your upper lip. This is because when turned on the side, it resembles the bow of Cupid.
Enhancing the Cupid’s bow is a popular request to improve the appearance and definition of your lips.
Dermal filler can be injected over permanent lip fillers. However, it should only be performed by highly cosmetic doctors with many precautions taken. The fillers should not interact. In the rare case of an infection, the presence of permanent filler would make the infection very hard to manage.
Infected permanent filler may require surgery to remove, as well as long-term antibiotics.
You should wait at least 4 weeks after lip filler before having another treatment. This allows time for swelling to subside, and the lip filler to integrate.
Yes. Duck lips occur when too much filler has been injected into your lips. It is easy to avoid duck lips as long as your injector is experienced, uses the right amount and type of filler, and the right injection technique.
Here at Cosmetic Connection, our team are experts in sculpting natural lip enhancements with dermal filler.
Yes, you can have 0.5ml of dermal filler in your lips.
We do not inject unused nose filler in the lips. The filler used in the nose is very thick, and is not designed to be injected into the lips. If you inject nose filler into your lips, you will have very hard lumps, swelling and a distortion of your lip shape.
Lip fillers have surprisingly little discomfort when performed correctly and with the appropriate use of anaesthetic.
When lip fillers are rushed, or inadequate anaesthetic has been used, they can be relatively painful.
At Cosmetic Connection, we prioritise your comfort during all lip filler treatments.
Injecting lip fillers is a very simple process.
After your comprehensive consultation, we clean, mark, and numb your lips.
We then use tiny needles or a blunt-tipped cannula to precisely place fillers in your lips.
After your lip fillers have been injected, we mould them smooth.
Lip fillers generally take 10-20 minutes to perform.
There are a number of effective numbing options for lip filler procedures. They include:
- Topical anaesthetic (numbing cream or gel) – the most commonly used
- Numbing injections – very effective, but you may have trouble speaking until the anaesthetic wears off after 1-2 hours
- Ice – simple and effective
At Cosmetic Connection, we also use premium lip fillers that contain local anaesthetic to ensure that your treatment has as little discomfort as possible.
The Russian lip filler technique is an approach to lip filler that involves vertical injections. The Russian technique aims to add height to your lips and create a very sharp border.
Russian lips have a higher chance of lumps and filler migration than the traditional approach, and are not suitable for everyone.
If you would like a more natural result, then traditional lip filler is a better approach.
While permanent filler can be used in the lips, we strongly advise against this. If there is a complication, you may need surgery.
As you age, your lips will change but the filler will not. This means the permanent filler may not look good in the future.
Finally, if your preferences about your lips change as you mature, it can be very difficult to adjust your result from permanent lip fillers.
We offer both needle and cannula techniques for lip filler at Cosmetic Connection. Sometimes we use a combination. The technique we use depends on your unique lip anatomy, and your personal preference.
Both needles and cannulas can inject lip filler. Each technique has pros and cons. Needles are quicker and more precise, but cause more bruising and swelling. Cannulas have a lower risk of bruising and swelling, but take longer.
The result of lip filler will usually last 12-24 months.
Maintenance treatments can increase the longevity of your lip fillers.
When performed correctly, lip fillers should never look fake.
Fake-looking lip fillers are generally the result of the lips having too much filler, having filler injected too often, or using the wrong type of lip filler.
Everyone is different when it comes to lip top-ups. Most clinics recommend revisiting the treatment every 12-24 months. However, if after this time the result is still there, then you should wait longer.
Many people find that their lip fillers can last longer than they anticipated (often over 2 years).
Maintaining lip filler results is different to building up your result. So if you’re considering lip filler for the first time, you may need 1 to 3 sessions over the first 6-12 months to achieve your ideal lip goals.
You will see an immediate result from your lip fillers. Allow 2-3 days for swelling to subside, and 2-4 weeks for the filler to settle.
What you will look like with lip filler will depend on how much is injected, the type of filler injected and the technique used.
Most people look naturally enhanced after lip filler. Fuller lips are often perceived as more attractive. Your lips will also look more hydrated.
1ml of lip filler can achieve a noticeable result, especially in someone who has smaller lips to begin with.
Those with naturally-larger lips or people who want to see a more pronounced difference may need more than 1ml.
Studies show that lip fillers do last longer the second time, as long as you have treatment before your previous result has worn off.
Lip filler will initially feel firm to touch. It softens over 2-4 weeks after injection.
Smoking has not been proven to shorten the longevity of lip filler. However, repetitively pursing your lips may cause the filler to break down faster, or to migrate.
Prepare for lip fillers with these steps:
- Cease all supplements 1 week before your treatment (unless taking for medical reasons)
- Avoid excessive alcohol for 24 hours before your treatment
- Attend your appointment without makeup
After lip fillers you will have some swelling. They will also be slightly tender when your numbing wears off. Bruising can occur on occasion, and is usually mild. Following the aftercare is the best way to minimise swelling and bruising.
After 3-4 days your lips will settle, but the filler continues to soften for 2-4 weeks. At this time, you can enjoy your new, fuller lips. If you want a more pronounced result, then you can repeat the treatment 1 month after your first session.
You can do light exercise immediately after lip fillers. Avoid intense exercise for 24 hours to minimise swelling.
You should avoid excessive alcohol for 24 hours after your lip fillers.
You can wear lip makeup the day after your lip fillers.
You are able to kiss the day after your lip filler, although your lips may be slightly tender.
Swelling after lip fillers is usually mild. Rarely it can be more pronounced. You can minimise swelling by following the aftercare instructions.
When your lip filler has been performed with care, most of the swelling should subside within 2-3 days.
We advise against massaging your lips. Small firm areas are normal in the healing phase, and incorrect massage can cause lip filler migration.
If you have a persistent lump after lip filler, then you are welcome to schedule a follow-up appointment with us to manage it.
We recommend waiting until the day after your lip filler before wearing lipstick.
Lip fillers are categorised as a low-risk cosmetic treatment.
Visiting an experienced, doctor-led cosmetic clinic is the best way to ensure that your lip fillers are performed as safely as possible.
The most common side effects from lip fillers are swelling and redness. Bruising can also occur on occasion. These treatment-related side effects will generally resolve in a few days.
Rare risks of lip fillers include infections and skin injury.
The following groups are not suitable for lip fillers:
- Aged under 18
- Currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- Those with unreasonable expectations about what can be achieved with lip fillers
Yes, lumps can occur after lip fillers. Fortunately, they are rare when the filler has been placed correctly.
If you do notice lumps after having lip filler, they can be related to swelling. Swelling-related lumps will usually resolve on their own after 1-2 weeks. If you have persistent lumps after lip filler they can be easily treated.
No, lip fillers cannot give you cold sores.
Those with a history of previous lip cold sores may have a flare after lip fillers. We may advise you to take cold sore medication to prevent a flare after lip fillers.
Yes, lip fillers can be removed. We can take your lip fillers out using dermal filler dissolver.
Yes, lip fillers are known to move and migrate out of the lips. This most commonly occurs if too much filler has been injected, or the lips have been filled too frequently.
To avoid migration, we recommend a very cautious and conservative approach.
If you do get lip filler migration it is not harmful, and can be treated with lip dermal filler dissolving.
All dermal filler treatments have a risk of bruising. Lips have a slightly higher chance of bruising because they have many blood vessels. About 50% of people have slight bruising that can be covered with makeup and resolved in a few days.
Bad bruising after lip fillers is rare.
