Facial balancing is a non-surgical procedure that uses cosmetic injectables to improve the ratio and proportions of your facial structure and features.
There are no ideal facial proportions, however optimal ratios depend on your sex, gender, ethnicity, culture, and personal aesthetic preferences.
Generally speaking, the top, middle and lower thirds of your face should be equal in height. When your face is divided into vertical fifths by lines that run through the inner and outer corners of your eyes, each section should also be approximately equal in width.
Facial balancing uses cosmetic injectables to adjust the relative proportions of each section of your face. It is typically done using dermal fillers, which add structure, while muscle slimming injections can also be used to reduce the size of areas that are overly prominent.
Facial balancing achieves instant results when done using dermal filler injections.
Results in areas treated with muscle slimming injections take around 4-6 weeks to be seen.

Horizontal facial thirds
The face can be divided horizontally into thirds. The boundaries of each third are:
- Upper: hairline to glabella (lower brow)
- Middle: glabella to subnasale (base of the nose)
- Lower: subnasale to chin
According to aesthetic principles, each third is the same length in the ideal face.
When the thirds are not equal, your face will look unbalanced. Most people have a dominant third, however the absolute size discrepancy is relatively small. People with greater differences in the size of each third often complain of things like a weak chin and a big nose.
Adjusting the horizontal thirds is a highly effective way to improve facial balance, and take the dominance away from certain features.
For example, we can make a dominant nose appear smaller by adding structure to the chin.
We can also reduce the dominance of a big chin by adding projection to your lips.
The rule of thirds is a great aesthetic principle to use when assessing your facial balance. However like all ratios, it is important to use the rule in context with your ethnicity, sex, gender, age, and personal preferences.
Vertical facial fifths
The vertical fifths principle draws from a key measurement in facial proportions: the inter-canthal distances. This is the distance between your eyes, and it has been used to develop a significant number of ideal facial proportions, ratios and distances.
The rule of vertical fifths states that in an aesthetically ideal face, passing 4 vertical lines across the inner and outer corners of the eyes should divide the face into 5 equal parts.
Applying this to the face during an aesthetic assessment allows us to identify parts of the face that are too wide or narrow, and design a treatment accordingly. Often used in rhinoplasty to determine ideal nasal width, the rule of fifths also has applications when augmenting your cheekbones.
