Cause & concerns

Acne scars

Acne scars result from damage to the structural layer of your skin caused by the inflammation associated with acne. Acne scars have different types, including rolling scars, boxcar scars, and ice pick scars.

Discolouration

People with darker skin tones often notice that their acne scars are also discoloured. This is because the inflammatory process that causes scars also stimulates the production of melanin, darkening them.

Redness

Lighter skin people may suffer with redness around their acne scars. This has a similar process to people with discoloured acne scars.

Treatment Options

Subcision

Subcision uses small needles to free fibrous bands that give certain acne scars a hollow appearance. It works for rolling and boxcar acne scar types.

View Treatment

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are a great option to support hollow scars, reducing how deep they are.

It’s a great adjunct to subcision, and can prevent the freed bands reattaching.

View Treatment

Rejuran

Rejuran is a remodelling injection designed to treat acne scars by reducing redness and pigmentation, and improving skin architecture.

View Treatment

Collagen stimulation

Collagen stimulating injections improve the structure of the scar tissue, helping reduce it’s severity.

Prescription skin care

There are four main types of acne scars:

    • Ice pick scars: these appear as small, narrow scars that extend deep into the skin. They are named due to the appearance which resembles the hole left after using an ice pick in ice.
    • Rolling scars: have a shallow, undulating appearance caused by sporadic tethering of the skin to deeper tissue. They are often associated with a loss of skin support.
    • Boxcar scars: appear as round or square shaped scars with a ‘punched-out’ look.
    • Hypertrophic scars: raised, enlarged scars that result from an overproduction of collagen.

Without treatment acne scars often persist for your entire life. Depending on how you age, they may get slightly better or worse.

The inflammatory process that occurs in response to acne causes damage to your skin and soft tissue. Because acne is often a chronic condition, repeated inflammation causes irregular remodelling of the collagen laid down as the skin heals. This results in scar formation.

Acne scarring results from disorganised collagen production during the acne healing process. It is worsened by severe, stubborn acne when inflammation is drawn out, and by picking and popping pimples.

Depending on how the acne scars developed, they may take on ice-pick, rolling, boxcar, ot hypertrophic forms, and may be associated with redness or pigmentation.

Skin discolouration is often seen in association with acne, and results from the inflammatory process that causes scars to form.

Post inflammatory erythema describes the redness associated with acne scars, and is more common in people with lighter skin colours. Lasers, and injectable treatments like Rejuran can improve redness from acne scars.

Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the darkening of skin that occurs with acne scars. It is more common in people with darker skin tones, and is treatable with prescription skin lighteners and some lasers.

With consistent, multi-modality treatments, most people experience a 70-80% reduction in the severity of their acne scarring. As with any treatment, the improvement in your scars will vary. The best way to improve your chance of great results is to be compliant with treatment recommendations, and care for your skin.

The best way to treat acne scars is with a combination approach and consistency. Each type of acne scar needs slightly different treatment approaches, but typically a combination of subcision, dermal filler for acne scars, collagen stimulating injections, and prescription skin care work best.
